About the #EndtheGap Squad

This campaign was initiated by First Nations and Metis youth who participated in the Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre's Indigenous Math Leadership Program at the University of Winnipeg on Treaty 1 territory in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Youth Leaders identified the gap in funding for First Nations schools as a social justice issue they wanted to learn more about and to take action on. Working with younger participants they learned about this issue and made a plan to share their insights and try to make the world a better place. This campaign is the final product of that learning. The videos were made with our youth filmmaking partners at Broadway Neighbourhood Centre's JUST TV program and with guidance from artist Jackie Traverse. We were deeply inspired by the Shannen's Dream campaign, led by the late Shannen Koostachin and her sister Serena of the Attawpiskat First Nation and the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society. Shannen, by fighting for the right to education before she was even in high school, showed us that we are never too young to stand up for justice. We hope that you will stand with us as we call on all people to support fair educational opportunities for First Nations youth living on reserve.
